Another Culley treat BOOK DESCRIPTION The fourth novel of the Kings of Northumbria series is set during the second half of Oswiu’s long and successful reign. He quickly establishes himself as the King of Mercia as well as of Northumbria after his crushing victory over his nemesis, Penda. His nephew, the treacherous Œthelwald who sided with Penda, disappears in mysterious circumstances and his place as Sub-king of Deira is taken by Oswiu’s son, Alchfrith. However, he will prove to be just as faithless as his cousin in due course. Oswiu invades North Wales to restore the true king to the throne and makes a friend of an old enemy. The new found harmony is disrupted when Mercia revolts against his rule and he is forced to accept the Rivers Mersey and Humber as the southern boundary of his kingdom. He is then faced with the murder of two of his allies in Scotland and he is forced to intervene in the various petty kingdoms of which it’s composed. Disharmony within his family and estrangement from his wife follows. No sooner have they been reconciled than a struggle between Roman Catholicism and the Celtic Church erupts. He resolves this in favour of the former at the Synod of Whitby but he loses the support of those who brought Christianity to the North. Conflict with his son Alchfrith over his support for an overly ambitious bishop follows and Oswiu quickly learns that church politics are every bit as complex as secular ones. Alchfrith is persuaded to lead a revolt and seize the throne but it fails and he flees into exile, as does Wilfrid, the bishop behind the attempted coup. However, the wily bishop soon returns and continues to sow dissention. Northumbria enters a golden age of prosperity and power and Oswiu feels that at last he can fulfil his dream of making a pilgrimage to Rome, but it is not to be and tragedy strikes as he’s about to depart. Alchfrith returns at this point and Northumbria heads towards civil war.

This is my 4th book of this series. The author has done a great job in creating a tapestry of believable character based on little known facts of England in the 660s. I have enjoyed them very much and look forward to the promised books of the continued series. I love reading historical novels of early England. The many battles and places become a bit tedious but the added fictional charters really made the stories come alive making these novels interesting and easy to read. I hope those choosing to read them will find them as enjoyable as I have.Product details

If you ever wanted to know more about the history of Scotland this series s a good place to start
I was very astonished how much I have enjoyed this series. I read one reviewer that stated that you don't get pulled into the characters. I will admit as I read the first book I did feel that way somewhat. But as I finished the first and second I understood there is so much going on and so many characters that it was not the theme of the book in a whole. The theme was the history and what a history. This is one of those rare finds that without all the nitty gritty of the characters you are still pulled in. And you don't get lost with all the characters. I was able to keep up with all the characters and it may be because you don't get wrapped up in one or two but in many instead. Not that you don't get to know the characters it just that you don't get all the emotional that many authors and readers alike think is needed to be a great book. Not so as this series proves. I could not find a reason for giving anything but a 5 star rating and a good review. The writhing pulls you in and but it keeps moving along at a quick pace. Actually too quick. I was disappointed as each book ended and was thrilled to find that the next book was available to read in the series. My only complaint is now I have finished the forth book in the series I do have to wait as if I recall the next book will not be out until the fall.
The history and the mix of deception and fictional inclusion kept my interest for more. The turmoil in the regions with family power struggle was very well presented and made for excellent reading.
